So far I seem to be keeping up with homework ok. The reading hasn’t been as bad as I thought. I’m disciplining myself to read a 100 pages a day and I’ve been managing quite well with that. I’m starting to get a cold so I think I’ll take a rest for tonight and hopefully finish my last novel tomorrow. Maybe I’ll even be able to write the annotations this weekend and be done with everything a week early. Looks like I will be able to handle two classes a semester without much difficulty, as long as I can keep my current work schedule.
We’ve discovered that our dog Chani would have been a useful pet to have at the front during WWI. She’s excellent at digging trenches, the proof of which can be seen at the back of our garden. Mike and I are convinced she’s building a defense against our neighbors’ fierce fighting poodles.

I’m working on the romance genre right now (gag me). Upon recommendation of one of my certification instructors, I’ve been using this “readers advisory” website, allreaders.com to try and find a romance which won’t make me want to shoot myself. It’s a very useful site. I’m especially impressed with the amount of plot detailed offered. Check out the “how sexual is the person” section of Jude Deveraux The Taming

After a painfully frustrating enrollment period, I finally attended my first class yesterday. My acceptance to the program was delayed a few weeks because I was an idiot and instructed my previous colleges to mail my transcripts to an incorrect address. By the time I was allowed to sign up for class all the required courses were already full so I had to resort to taking an upper level elective titled Readers Advisory.
I am extremely impressed with OU so far. The admissions office was very patient and understanding about my careless mistake and worked extra hard to make sure things were sorted out by the time the enrollement period was closed. I am also very impressed with my professor who seems very experienced and knowledgable in several different areas of library and information science. Besides being co-editor of RUSA, Professor Van Fleet has also just been presented with the ALA Outstanding Library and Information Science Teacher Award. She has a wonderful personality and great sense of humor. I have a feeling I’m really going to enjoy this class.
Being upper level, most of the students in the class are either about to graduate or are at least half way through the program. So I felt a little out of place. However, during some of our in class excercises I found that I was at least almost at an equal footing with everyone else when it came to research and reference skills. Our out of class assignments will be time consuming but not difficult. There is a great deal of reading, at least for me, since I’m a slow reader. We’ll be reading one novel a week plus about a hundred pages of text book reading. Each novel will be from a different genre and we will then write an annotation for each to hand in at each class period. We’ll also be doing book talks and a patron interview. This assignment will require us to interview someone in the appropriate reader advisory manner and deduce from that interview a selection of five books which that person might enjoy to read. As you might of guessed, Mike is going to be my patron and I will probably be choosing books from the horror/sci-fi/fantasy realm.
The two genres I will be reading for the next class (we meet every other Saturday for six hours) will be Literary and Mystery. I’ve already chosen my Literary book, If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor. I started reading this over the holidays but put it aside so I could dive into Dr. Zhivago which I got for Christmas. So far it’s an excellent read, unusual story and beautiful language.

Well I once again get back to writing a blog entry. I tried last week but after finishing writing it, I clicked on a link and accidentally deleted everything. Photography has come back into my life. I decided I needed to do it, I’ve had quite a long enough break. But I don’t plan on going into it full swing. I think it’ll probably be something I’ll do on the side. I’d like to focus on band photography, but I think I will try my hand at a few portraits first, just to get back into the swing of things.
I also ordered me and carleen a bokken each-bokken are wooden swords in the shape of katanas that are used for practice. I’m going to learn sword fighting. This should be interesting.
Also, my best friend in NY is getting married on May 29th So I have to figure out how many days i can take off for that. I can’t wait. I haven’t seen them in so long. It should be a blast.

So we’ve had a little scare with Chani this morning. She’s been really lethargic lately, sleeping a lot more than usual. We figured it was just because of all the visitors and crazyness of the holidays. She got really sick this morning, vomiting, tremors, disorientation. I’m not sure what was wrong and I’m not sure she’s completely recovered yet. She’s still got these strange tremors. So, I’m taking her to the vet tomorrow. I did some research on her symptoms. I discovered something I had heard about before but didn’t really take to seriously at the time. Apparently grapes are quite toxic to dogs. It can cause severe kidney failure and sometimes death. I called the vet and they don’t seem to think she’s in serious danger since I’ve only fed her a total of five grapes in the past week. There are also several more plants that are dangerous three of which I have in my house (but their out of reach of Chani, thank goodness). If you have a pet it might be a good idea to browse the sights below and become familiar with some of these plant names.

Christmas this year was absolutely spectacular! Together with siblings, parents, uncle and cousins we were a party of eleven for Christmas Eve dinner. Mom prepared a delicious meal complete with rice pudding and Success Cake. As has always been our custom, “the kids” were made to clean the dishes after dinner. This rather torcherous tradition was originally concocted by my parents when my brother and I were small to help give them a break and of course, to heighten the anticipation of opening our presents.
As usual Mike and I recieved a great deal too much. My parents bought us a much needed luggage set. Now we won’t have to borrow theirs anymore. We also recieved many adorable homemade gifts from my cousins, Frida and Alex. We now have a wonderful collection of handmade candles, cards, soaps and marsepan. The next morning Mike and I celebrated his family’s traditional way by opening up presents in the morning (after finishing the necessary numbers of coffee). Since Kim had given Jeff and Theresa a DVD player for Christmas, Mike and I bought them Fellowship and Two Towers extended versions on DVD. Mike got what Mike loves most. Tools. I also bought him the Simpsons 3rd season which we’ve been busy watching all week. Jeff and Theresa got me a candlemaking starter kit and Mike got me a bunch of crafty stuff for making altered books so I’m all set for my new hobbies now. I started my first altered book yesterday.
Mike’s family stayed over the weekend. It was so nice having them. They have always been so easy to get along with. I was obviously nervous about their visit, as any daughter-in-law would be but strangely enough, once they arrived I felt very much at ease. I only cooked two meals, one of which was a flop but luckily I made it after I made the successful meal. I was also really glad to see that Mike got to spend some good quality time with his dad. They spent Friday afternoon building a fence for our backyard. Mike got to use all his new tools, of course.
The only downer was Sunday. We had decided to take a trip up to Woolaroc. On the way up we hit a dog. It was a horrific sight which will always stay with me. We hit hard enough to put a dent in the car. When we drove back to check on it, it had managed to get back on it’s feet again but blood was pouring out of it’s mouth. It’s jaw was broken. We managed to find its owner and by that time the dog had actually managed to make it back too. The owner freaked when she finally realized what had happened. Jeff offered to pay the bill and left her his address. We don’t know whether it survived or not. So, none of us really felt like sight seeing after that. Everyone one was just too upset. I started crying because all I could think about was Chani. I just wanted to get home to her.
New Years was rather uneventful for us. We just went over to mom and dad’s so we could spend time with my cousins. My uncle showed us how to make soap which turned out to be a more complicated and dangerous than I thought it would be.
For the first time in years I have actually made some “New Year resolutions”. I’ve always thought the idea to be rather silly since I seem to be making “new resolutions” year round anyway. We’ll see how it goes.
