A creative writing major from NYU was caught living in the 24 hour study area of Bobst Library. He works four jobs, recieves a $15,000 scholarship and several other loans but all that apparently only covers tuition, not housing. After getting caught, the administration at his school was kind enough to offer him free housing for a semester. The cost for education is becoming so outrageous.
He has a blog which is interesting to read too.

I sympathize with the guy. My scholarship for the next five years is $17,000 per year. Harvard subsidized housing for a shared apartment is over $1000 per month to live near campus. If you do the math, you see that this doesn’t leave you much for food…
I decided not to live in an apartment the first year (I can see if the non-subsidized housing off-campus has more reasonable rates) so I’ll be living in a student dorm for about $6500 for 10 months.

Hmm, strange that NYU student got funding only for tuition? Normally a fellowship exempts tuition and the rest of the money is for misc. expenses and survival…

Do many students in the US do PhDs without funding?
