Animal NON-Control

This morning, a little dog wondered into our yard. I recognized it as the same dog that came up to me while I was walking Chani and Turbo during my dinner break one day. There were a bunch of people with their kids standing out front of a house nearby so I figured it was with them so I just kept walking.
It was a scruffy looking little thing, sort of terrier and daschund mix, but really small like a minature. I thought it was a puppy at first but Mike noticed that it had been neutered so we figured it had to be at least six months. Anyway, we called Animal Control to have them come pick the littley guy up to take him to the shelter where he would be fed and cleaned and have a chance to live a happy life chasing postmen and eating june bugs. But I haven’t had very good experiences with Animal Control and I should have known better than to rely on them again.
I’m not sure what Animal Control is like in other places but here in Bartlesville it consists of one lady, who answers the phone, and one man, who I assume is what would be considered the quintessential dog catcher. The problem is, he takes so long to arrive that he unfortunately isn’t a very proficient dog catcher. The first time we called him, the two dogs that had wondered into our yard were gone by the time he rang our door bell. When we told him what direction the dogs went, he replied with a “Well hell, we’ll probably never catch’em now.” No kiddin’.
The second time I called them was when I found a dog wondering around my parents neighborhood one Sunday afternoon. Animal Control apparently doesn’t work on Sundays. They don’t work after 6pm either. So, if a rabbid dog happens to be wondering around your house during these hours, hope your neighbor has a shot gun.
As for the little guy we found this morning, I ended up taking him to the SPCA during dinner because Animal Control never showed up. He was so cute. He sat on my lap for most of the drive, staring out the window, wagging his tail. So, if anyone in the area is interested in adopting a cute spunky little dog, contact the Washington County SPCA. Hopefully they’ll be able to get him healthy again. He was so skinny.
