Carleen headed back to work yesterday and so it was my responsibility to take care of Liam in the morning - something I had yet to experience. One thing can be said for Liam, he has stamina. I’ll admit, day 1 did not go over very well. The morning started out fine, I read to him, popped him in his swing, turned on some music for him; a potpurri of things to keep him entertained. I attempted to slip in a few naps here and there on the few occasions he looked like he might drift off, unfortunately he never fully drifted so my attempts were in vein and generally caused me to only become more tired. It was an altogether frustrating day.
Day 2 was not bad at all, however. I was able to keep him either asleep, fed or entertained most of the morning. While I am painfully tired, I’ve found that simply staying awake is far better for me than trying to get in a few naps. I come from a long line of insomniacs and it takes me a long time to get to sleep - naps are something I don’t do. Luckily I have only 2 days in a row during the week that are like this; Carl & Siri watch him on Wednesday and Thursday, then I have him again on Friday.
I discovered a great little calming trick this morning in Carleen’s Yoga Ball. You know these huge balls that people use for Yoga now? I just sat on that with Liam and gentle bounced for a few minutes, it calmed him right down, almost to the point of sleep. But now it is time to take a shower and get ready for bed, as Carleen should be home within the next half hour. This is a heavy learning experience for me, as I haven’t really gotten a good gauge on Liam’s daytime schedule. I was surprised yesterday at how long he stayed awake, and equally surprised today (given yesterday) how long he is sleeping. I’m sure many parents out there would tell me children and surprise go hand in hand. Look at me…I’m learning!
